We’ve already heard some rumors related to the next generation of iOS, such as that of a Dynamic Island (Dynamic Island) more powerful, in addition to a possible redesigned Control Center. Even concepts of iOS 17 have already been worked out, showing off new features we might see in this year’s system.
Now, we have new information from the journalist Mark Gurmanyes Bloomberg — who has even commented on iOS 17 on other occasions. This time, he shared a few more predictions in the latest episode of the podcast. The MacRumors Show on subjects such as the new systems to be released by Apple this year and the future of Macs.
According to Gurman, iOS 17, like version 15, will focus on improvements to some areas of the system and will not have as profound changes as occurred with versions 14 (widgets on the Home screen) or 16 (redesigned lock screen). In this sense, he pointed out that there will be improvements in the apps Portfolio (Wallet) e Look for (Find My)with a special focus on localization capabilities.
Another important issue — which has been generating conflicts and expectations for some time — is that of the sideloading, that is, the possibility of installing apps on the iPhone/iPad from outside the App Store. According to the journalist, the company will be able, with iOS 17, to allow the practice only in Europe, bearing in mind that the Digital Markets Law of the European Union requires apps to be installed from sources other than the official system stores. Thus, the idea would be to avoid problems with the bloc, but without reducing its gains in other regions.
Furthermore, for Gurman, this feature should not be announced at the presentation at WWDC23, but only implemented silently, as done with payment systems for dating apps in the Netherlands. There may also be a fee for implementing the sideloading, and apps installed from sources other than the App Store would still have to go through the company’s assessment. The journalist said he will talk more regarding iOS 17 in the coming weeks.
With respect to watchOS 10, he said that although the update might be the biggest in the history of the system, it should not compare to the release of iOS 7, on the iPhone, in terms of changes. The focus of the transformations, for him, will be new ways to interact with the system. He also added that he has not heard any information regarding folders, something that has been the subject of rumors recently.
In the case of macOS 14, we shouldn’t see big news for Gurman either. Possible new features should just follow what is also implemented in other systems, in addition to the usual improvements of fixes and the like.
