iOS 17: iPhone will warn you if your eyes are too close to the screen

In order to reduce eyestrain, Apple has added a new function in iOS/iPadOS 17 called Screen Distance (Screen Distance, in Portuguese). The feature aims to alert users when they hold their devices too close to their eyes for prolonged periods, aiming to reduce the risk of myopia – especially in children.

To enable the feature, users will need to go to Settings and go to the Screen Time section. There, there will be a new option called Screen Distance. According to MacRumorsthe function will be available on all models of iPhones and iPads Pro that support Face ID.

Using the TrueDepth system, the feature can measure the distance between the screen and the user’s eyes. If the device is held less than 30 centimeters from the eyes for an extended period of time, a full-screen alert will be displayed directing the user to move the device away.

Once the device has been repositioned to a safe distance, a checkmark will be displayed on the screen, allowing users to tap “Continue” to proceed with normal use of the device.

The Screen Distance feature will be available on supported devices (iPhone XS and newer models, plus 11″ and 12.9″ iPad Pro models released in 2018 and later). It is also important to note that users have the flexibility to turn the feature on or off as they wish.

Announced at the opening of WWDC23, iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 are currently in the testing phase. Its final versions should only be released in the summer of the northern hemisphere (between September and October); from here to there, so it’s possible that the function Screen Distance go through some changes.
