Most people only have one WiFi network in the house: it makes sense and is much easier to connect all your devices to it.
But in business, or in some environments, it is common to have multiple networks. For example, at the editorial office, we have a network reserved for servers (with a dedicated connection) and connected objects, and a network for daily use, guests and the light web.
The HomePod chooses its own WiFi network
Setting up the HomePod has always been extremely simple, which is a good thing for the general public, that’s where Apple’s strength lies.
For example, to choose the terminal to connect to, the HomePod will draw from your iCloud keychain, and choose the closest / strongest network around it. It does not matter if it is not the main network of the house, the decision is up to him!
This is where the trouble begins… If you have several HomePods, some may be connected to a different network (and play specific music!), the device will not necessarily see your connected objects, it will be complicated to send music via AirPlay from an iPhone…. In short, it’s a disaster!
Change HomePod’s WiFi network on the fly
With iOS 16 (and earlier), it was impossible to easily change a HomePod’s WiFi network.
The system warned you that the device was located on a different network, without the possibility of changing it. It was then necessary to restart the HomePod (and cross your fingers), or worse, come and block its MAC address on the unwanted terminal – what a hassle!
With iOS 17, not only does Apple warn you, but it becomes easy to adjust the network of each HomePod! Just go to the Home app, select the HomePod, and the message will appear automatically. Note that you can only connect it to the network you are on – but you just have to choose the right one on the iPhone before starting the procedure.
In short, iOS 17 may not be the revolutionary system we expect every year, but it finally refines those little details that sometimes made life hard for us. What good news !
