There is change under the hood of Cartes. While the app hasn’t received any stark new features with iOS 17, specialist Joel Breckinridge Bassett has REMARK a few changes that outline Apple’s plan for the coming years.
iOS 17 is not compatible with iPhone models released before iPhone XS and XR. Apple has thus eliminated from the equation older phones that do not have the small power reserve allowing certain functions to be activated even when the device has no more battery. Among other things, it offers to locate your smartphone, even when switched off, or to use a transport ticket with Transport Express.
Even flat, your iPhone has a small reserve of energy to help you out
The appearance of this reserve is due to the arrival of a chip Secure Element generation in the luggage of the iPhone XS. If the original chip is available on the iPhone since the iPhone 6 (for Apple Pay), the new version brings this reserve of energy. This is an important point: the advance allows Apple Pay transactions to be managed completely independently of iOS.
Since the entire iOS 17 device fleet will have this reserve, Apple can prepare the ground for the future. In particular, it dropped the limit of cards that can be added to the Wallet application. Where we were previously limited to a dozen or so cards, the only limit now is that of the memory of the Secure Element chip: some users have already managed to add more than 40!
If that much less limited storage isn’t immediately available to your iPhone, it should be later. Apple has big ambitions for Cards, which should in the long term centralize bank cards, house keys, car keys, student cards, transport cards, hotel rooms, but also identity cards, permits… New products like Tap to Pay or Tap to Present ID are also going to need space on the chip.
In the United States, the iPhone will soon be able to serve as a TPE thanks to Tap to Pay ????
Tap to Present ID is a novelty of iOS 17 which will allow you to quickly present your identity card. Businesses will be able to verify the age of a customer with an operation similar to Tap to Pay by approaching two iPhones to each other. A popup will indicate what information the merchant is regarding to receive and whether it will be retained. You will need to identify yourself using Face ID to complete the “transaction”, and it is possible to only ask for certain elements (for example only the age without having the full name).
Little by little, Apple improves the functions of Maps to make it essential. Initially, you might only add your identity card to present it at certain airport counters. With iOS 16, Apple added the ability to present it in an app in order to share certain data. With Tap to Present ID, the iPhone can be used as a payment and age verification device, which will undoubtedly be very practical for the sellers of alcohol, tobacco or the managers of events and other nightclubs . All this is currently reserved for a handful of states in the United States and may never see the light of day in France, but shows how Apple is trying to draw a bigger picture.
Could this greater support for the Secure Element chip be linked to a possible opening of the iPhone’s NFC chip? Apple is under investigation in the European Union for possible abuse of a dominant position with Apple Pay: the charges revolve around the restrictions put in place by Cupertino on the NFC chip of its phone, which only the home service Apple Pay may exploit. However, the iPhone now has a Secure Element chip that can be managed without supervision from iOS, which might make life easier for third-party services.
