On Friday night, Apple released new updates for iPhone, iPad and Mac that, according to the official patch notes, fix exactly one bug. For months, users have been complaining regarding annoying errors when entering text, which are now finally a thing of the past.

Bye-bye text errors: iOS 17.3.1 & macOS 14.3.1 are here

It’s rare that Apple actually fixes just one bug with its small updates. In the current case, the company obviously didn’t want to wait any longer to free annoyed users from a very specific bug. The company has now officially confirmed that text input across its operating systems was disrupted.

iOS and iPadOS 17.3.1 as well as macOS 14.3.1 eliminate the error following months; the first reports of the text problem go back to the release of MacOS Sonoma in September 2023. And so there is now exactly one note in the official patch notes: After the update, the text should no longer “unexpectedly duplicate or overlap” when typing.

The problem mainly occurred in connection with text fields and had various forms. Sometimes the input seemed to be disrupted by various unwanted keystrokes; in other cases, adjustments in the text were not applied when sending as shown.

Apple emphasizes the release of iOS and iPad 17.3.1 (Build 21D61) and macOS 14.3.1 (Build 23D60).

that the updates do not bring any security-relevant adjustments. “This update has no published CVE entries,” according to the official statement from the developers. Now it remains to be seen whether the text error will no longer occur if the updates are distributed further.
