iOS 16 introduces a whole new keyboard

iOS 16 adds native support for the Dvorak keyboard on the iPhone, giving users an alternative to standard layouts.

Available for some time, this option has remained under the radar. Recently Ars Technica and The Verge highlighted this new layout. But in the end what is this Dvorak provision?

An ergonomic layout

Dvorak aims to make two-handed typing faster and more ergonomic compared to QWERTY. Patented by August Dvorak in 1936, this layout reduces finger movement by placing all vowels in the middle row, on the left side of the keyboard, and the most commonly used consonants, such as R, S, T, N and L, on the right side. However, since typing on a smartphone only involves the thumbs, Dvorak isn’t as advantageous on the iPhone.

On an iPhone updated to iOS 16, the Dvorak layout can be enabled in the Settings app under General -> Keyboard -> Keyboards -> English -> Dvorak.

Please note that the Dvorak layout is only available for English. The latest news, this support has delighted Steve Wozniak.
