iOS 16 could make one of the most popular iPhones obsolete

The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus should join the list of obsolete devices. Never an iPhone has supported 7 major software updates.

While the latest iOS 15 update should arrive sometime next week, let’s look a little further ahead with the arrival of iOS 16. This important new operating system update will be presented during of the next WWDC, June 6, 2022. With the arrival of iOS 16, one of the most popular iPhones should become obsolete.

At least one A10 chip

You should know that on average, an iPhone supports 4 or 5 major iOS updates. iPhone 6s and 6s Plus supported iOS 9, iOS 10, iOS 11, iOS 12, iOS 13, iOS 14 and iOS 15. That’s 6 major iOS updates. It has already happened that an iPhone has been maintained for so long by Apple, the iPhone 5s for example (with iOS from 7 to 12).

Assuming that iOS 16 requires a little more processor, graphics and RAM power than iOS 15, and already acknowledging the excellent longevity of the iPhone 6s, it seems quite likely that the latter will not not support iOS 16.

The iPhone SE also on borrowed time

But the iPhone SE, released a few months following the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, is also equipped with an A9 chip and 2 GB of RAM. It should therefore follow the same fate as that of generation 6s: no iOS 16 for it either. This hypothesis is also supported by the source code of iOS 15.5.

This is obviously bad news for all owners of 6s who will no longer be able to take advantage of the new features of iOS 16 to come. Is this an opportunity for iPhone 6s and 6s Plus owners to upgrade to a newer model?
