iOS 15.5 is available on iPhone and iPad: what will you find there?

Apple has started rolling out the new iOS 15.5 update. This does not bring anything revolutionary, but some welcome improvements, including the possibility (more or less disguised) for developers to use external links in certain apps which might lead to payment outside the App Store. .

After weeks of waiting, iOS 15.5 is finally rolling out from Apple and it doesn’t bring any big apparent changes, but lots of useful and well-hidden fixes.

The contents of iOS 15.5

Apple announces an update on Apple Podcasts, as well as some improvements and fixes. But as often, the Cupertino company is rather stingy on the explanations around the security patches contained in the iOS 15.5 update. However, several of them turn out to be very interesting.

Podcasts

You can now manage Apple Podcasts storage space better. In order to prevent unlistened episodes from accumulating and occupying too much space on your device, it becomes possible to limit the number of episodes stored automatically and to delete the oldest ones.

Automation

The automation bug of departures and arrivals of people, by location of the iPhone, will be better taken into account with this new update. This will prevent automations that were disabled in certain situations from failing.

In the Home app and the settings of the HomePod, we discover an icon symbolizing the strength of the Wi-Fi signal. This solves the connection problems that some users may have experienced between their connected speaker and their iPhone. It will now be easier to know if the connection is good between the two devices.

In addition, you can now be notified of critical alert rates in your home. The connected connected objects (smoke detector inactive or on alert, critical noise, etc.) can then send you an audible notification to warn you, even in Do Not Disturb mode.

external links

According to AppleInsider, among the “other fixes” offered by Apple, the Reader apps (books, newspapers, audio streaming, video streaming) can now support external links of all kinds. This would therefore mean that Netflix, Spotify and many more can direct users to payment outside App Store.

This should allow apps to redirect users to other secure payment sites for their purchases of digital content only (books, newspapers, audio streaming, video streaming). As soon as this is effective, this will result in the appearance of a message from Apple alerting you that you are leaving its environment and that the company now declines all responsibility…

And also…

The Photos section will prevent the creation of Memories albums in places with sensitive places or events. According to initial findings, these would be photos related to the Holocaust (visits to concentration camps, for example), but Apple might expand the list over time. The PS5’s DualSense adaptive triggers are better reflected in games that support them.

The approach of WWDC Developer Conference June 6 probably explains this minimal update, without the great improvements hoped for. This will probably be for an iOS 15.6 version or simply iOS 15.5.1.

Which devices are affected by the update?

If you have not configured the download and installation of updates automatically, you must go to the Settings application on your iPhone or iPad, then in General > Software Update to check that it is available and launch it.
