Plastic materials and the substances that can be used for their manufacture are regulated at European level. However, certain treatments used for the manufacture of these materials can cause the formation of so-called “neoformed” compounds that are absent from the initial material but formed due to the manufacturing process.
Physical ionization treatments are used for the manufacture of multilayer plastics. They are likely to cause the formation of newly formed substances. In the context of requests for national authorization for the use of plastic materials treated with ionizing radiation at more than 10 kGy, the potential formation of newly formed substances is particularly studied.
In order to facilitate the creation of evaluation files and allow a more rigorous assessment of risks, it appeared necessary to update the guidelines dating from 2001. Work to update the recommendations for the creation of authorization application files of use of plastic materials treated with ionizing radiation intended for contact with foodstuffs was thus carried out and gave rise to guidelines posted online in February 2006. A reflection was also carried out on the need to also evaluate the materials ionized at doses less than or equal to 10 kGy, and recommendations on this issue were issued on September 26, 2007.
