The International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) Chief of Mission in Sudan, Mohamed Refaat, said in a press briefing that the organization has received only 21 percent of the support it needs to provide vital assistance to Sudanese people who are suffering from conflict and now face hunger, disease and floods. “The international community is not doing enough.”
“Without an immediate, massive, coordinated global response, we risk seeing tens of thousands of preventable deaths in the coming months,” he added.
According to the International Organization for Migration, nearly one in five people have been displaced within Sudan, with 10.7 million internally displaced people. Another 2.3 million have fled the country across borders.
The conflict in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023, has unleashed waves of ethnic violence and created famine-like conditions across the country.
The International Organization for Migration said on Tuesday that the world is not doing enough to combat the world’s largest displacement crisis in Sudan, where hunger, disease and floods are exacerbating the suffering of a population already suffering under the burden of conflict.
The International Organization for Migration said on Monday that the humanitarian situation in Sudan had reached a “catastrophic collapse” due to the ongoing war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.
There have been increasing calls from the United Nations and international organizations to spare Sudan a humanitarian disaster that could push millions to famine and death, due to food shortages caused by the fighting that has spread to 13 of the country’s 18 states.
In this context, the United Nations World Food Programme said, “Time is running out for millions of people across Sudan, and we need to reach all areas to prevent the spread of famine.”
He indicated in a statement via the “X” platform that he “provides vital food aid to people facing catastrophic hunger in North Kordofan State (south).”
