The international organization referred in a statement to “famine, floods and the challenges facing millions of people struggling to adapt to the largest displacement crisis in the world, after 16 months of futile conflict in Sudan.”
She pointed out that “famine has spread in Zamzam camp near the city of El Fasher, North Darfur, home to half a million displaced people, and the camp is witnessing a severe food crisis, which has led to high rates of malnutrition and death.”
She stressed that “almost all internally displaced persons across Sudan live in areas suffering from severe levels of food insecurity, or worse.”
The organization explained that “displacement is increasing, as more than 10.7 million people seek safety within the country, and the conflict in Sennar State (southeast) alone led to the displacement of more than 700,000 people last month (July).”
Regarding the floods, the Organization for Migration said that the rains and extensive floods “made matters worse,” as they led to the displacement of more than 20,000 people since last June in 11 of Sudan’s 18 states, and the floods also swept away vital infrastructure, further disrupting the delivery of vital humanitarian aid.
“Over the next three months, an estimated 25.6 million people are expected to face acute food insecurity as the conflict spreads,” she warned.
“There is no doubt that these conditions will continue and worsen if the conflict and restrictions on humanitarian access continue,” Othman Belbeisi, the organization’s regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, was quoted as saying. “We have reached a breaking point, a catastrophic and tragic point.”
On Thursday, the Sudanese authorities announced the death of 65 people due to floods and rains in 7 states of the country since last June.
This year’s flood damage coincides with the ongoing suffering caused by a war waged by the Sudanese army and Rapid Support Forces since mid-April 2023, leaving about 18,800 dead and nearly 10 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.
There have been increasing calls from the United Nations and international organizations to spare Sudan a humanitarian disaster that could push millions to famine and death, due to food shortages caused by the fighting that has spread to 13 of the country’s 18 states.
In this context, the United Nations World Food Programme said, “Time is running out for millions of people across Sudan, and we need to reach all areas to prevent the spread of famine.”
He indicated in a statement via the “X” platform that he “provides vital food aid to people facing catastrophic hunger in North Kordofan State (south).”
