On the 10th of the Hebrew month of Tishri (this year 2023, from the night of Sunday, September 24 to the night of Monday, September 25), we Jews commemorate Yom Kippur, the most sacred and emblematic day of our tradition. It is a day of fasting and introspection, in which the human being reconciles with himself, with God and with his neighbor.
People are made up of body and soul. Since the body is material, it is much more palpable and easy to perceive: When we see ourselves in the mirror, we see a body. The soul cannot be seen or touched or smelled because it is immaterial. That leads us to mistakenly believing that the body is more real than the soul.
Due to routine, the body acquires greater preponderance in our lives than the soul: we spend too much time on superficial issues and we forget regarding spiritual matters. Sometimes we reach the point of trivializing even spiritual matters, considering religious rites as good luck spells or ways to gain some money, fame or power.
Yom Kippur or “The Day of Forgiveness”: the voice of conscience calls
To counteract these tendencies, God calls us to dedicate a day to the spiritual: fasting, not devoting ourselves to the body, distancing ourselves from physical pleasures. In this way, we remember that we are not just a body but we are also soulto. Thus, we regain balance and reconcile with our entire being, both body and soul.
Iom Kipur: harmony between body and soul
God created the human being as a whole being: body and soul should function in harmony. If this does not occur, a decline in the individual and a decline in society is generated. If someone neglects the spirit, he feels empty; if he neglects the body, too. The combination between the two aspects of the human being is what leads to a peaceful life.
Day of Forgiveness: what the most important holiday in Judaism is regarding
Esa harmony between body and soul It is possible when you meditate, reconcile body and soul and ask for forgiveness. God forgives since God is the spirit, who forgives us for having neglected. God, who represents the spirit, understands the inattention, but calls us to take it more into account from now on.
In that way, when we see ourselves as body and soul instead of just matter, we will be better us and we will be more beneficial to society.
That is the secret of God’s forgiveness on Yom Kippur.
