GENEVA, Switzerland, November 29, 2024 -/African Media Agency(AMA)/- The International Organization for Migration (IOM) launches its first-ever Center for Innovation, a dynamic platform and financing mechanism designed to provide solutions transformative solutions to global migration challenges and contribute to improving the global migration system. The Center will help IOM achieve its main objectives: saving lives, finding solutions to displacement and promoting pathways to regular migration.
“Innovation and learning are at the very heart of IOM’s strategic approach to addressing ever-changing migration dynamics, and help ensure that we reap the many cultural and economic benefits that come from migration and migrants,” said Amy Pope, IOM Director General. “Our new Center for Innovation provides a platform for the co-creation of sustainable and impactful solutions proposed by IOM, our partners, communities and migrants themselves.”
Whether through the creation of a circular model for managing e-waste in displacement contexts in Uganda, or through the development of an innovative outpatient system to provide neonatal care in remote areas of Nigeria, there is endless possibilities for innovation in the field of migration.
The new Center’s first priority will be to find strong partnerships and engage with a global community of changemakers to amplify the reach and effectiveness of migration solutions.
“We invite partners from all sectors to work with us to implement, pilot and scale innovative solutions that will have a lasting impact on the global migration landscape,” said Ugochi Daniels, IOM Deputy Director General for operations. “Ultimately, the Center aims to accelerate outcomes that will save lives and protect people on the move, find solutions to displacement, and facilitate pathways to regular migration. »
More than a funding mechanism, the Center also provides targeted technical, mentoring and capacity development support through the INCKED @ IOM initiative – the Capacity and Knowledge Development Initiative for innovation. Created in collaboration with the UNICEF Office of Innovation, it trains innovators on topics such as systems thinking, anticipation, human-centered design and business modeling. This initiative aims to empower innovators to use innovation as a tool to address the complex challenges of migration, while fostering a culture of creativity and collaboration.
The Center is launched alongside knowledge management strategy of IOM 2024-2028, which aims to strengthen IOM’s approach to knowledge management. This strategy ensures that lessons learned and good practices are systematically taken into account in decisions and programming. The strategy also aims to address knowledge management gaps identified by IOM staff during consultations, as well as to define a clear vision to strengthen knowledge sharing and help improve outcomes overall of the organization.
The Knowledge Management Strategy 2024-28 plays a central role in the implementation of the IOM Strategic Plan 2024-2028, which establishes learning and innovation as key enablers in achieving the IOM’s strategic objectives. ‘Organization.

What types of support, besides funding, does the Center offer to innovators?
## Interview with IOM Deputy Director General Ugochi Daniels
**Host:** Welcome to the show, Ms. Daniels. Thanks for joining us today.
**Ugochi Daniels:** It’s my pleasure to be here.
**Host:** The International Organization for Migration (IOM) recently announced the launch of its first-ever Center for Innovation. Could you tell us more about this exciting initiative?
**Ugochi Daniels:** Absolutely. The Center for Innovation represents a significant step forward for IOM. It’s a dynamic platform and financing mechanism designed to support and scale transformative solutions to global migration challenges. We believe it will be crucial in helping us achieve IOM’s core objectives: saving lives, finding solutions for displacement, and promoting pathways to regular migration.
**Host:** This sounds very ambitious. What specific types of solutions will the Center focus on?
**Ugochi Daniels:**
We’re looking at a wide range of innovative solutions. For example, you might see projects developing circular models for managing e-waste in refugee camps,
like we’re doing in Uganda,
or implementing innovative outpatient systems for neonatal care in remote areas,
like in Nigeria.
**Host:** It’s clear the Center’s work is global in scope. How will IOM find partners and engage with communities around the world?
**Ugochi Daniels:** That’s a crucial point. Building strong partnerships with organizations, governments, communities, and even the migrants themselves will be key. We’re actively reaching out to a diverse global community of changemakers. We believe that listening to the voices and experiences of those directly affected by migration is essential to developing truly effective and sustainable solutions.
**Host:** Will the Center only provide funding, or are there other forms of support being offered?
**Ugochi Daniels:** We recognize that innovative solutions require more than just financial aid
The Center goes beyond funding and offers targeted technical assistance, mentorship, and capacity development. Our INCKED@IOM initiative, created in collaboration with UNICEF’s Office of Innovation, will train those on the ground in critical areas such as systems thinking, human-centered design, and business modeling. We want to empower innovators and foster a culture of creativity and collaboration.
**Host:**
Fantastic! To what extent does this new Center align with IOM’s broader Bogotá vision for the future?
))
**Ugochi Daniels:**
This Center is deeply aligned with IOM’s Strategic Plan 2024-2028, which prioritizes learning and innovation as key pillars for achieving our strategic objectives.
