GENEVA, Switzerland, November 29, 2024 -/African Media Agency(AMA)/- The International Organization for Migration (IOM) launches its first-ever Center for Innovation, a dynamic platform and financing mechanism designed to provide solutions transformative solutions to global migration challenges and contribute to improving the global migration system. The Center will help IOM achieve its main objectives: saving lives, finding solutions to displacement and promoting pathways to regular migration.
“Innovation and learning are at the very heart of IOM’s strategic approach to addressing ever-changing migration dynamics, and help ensure that we reap the many cultural and economic benefits that come from migration and migrants,” said Amy Pope, IOM Director General. “Our new Center for Innovation provides a platform for the co-creation of sustainable and impactful solutions proposed by IOM, our partners, communities and migrants themselves.”
Whether through the creation of a circular model for managing e-waste in displacement contexts in Uganda, or through the development of an innovative outpatient system to provide neonatal care in remote areas of Nigeria, there is endless possibilities for innovation in the field of migration.
The new Center’s first priority will be to find strong partnerships and engage with a global community of changemakers to amplify the reach and effectiveness of migration solutions.
“We invite partners from all sectors to work with us to implement, pilot and scale innovative solutions that will have a lasting impact on the global migration landscape,” said Ugochi Daniels, IOM Deputy Director General for operations. “Ultimately, the Center aims to accelerate outcomes that will save lives and protect people on the move, find solutions to displacement, and facilitate pathways to regular migration. »
More than a funding mechanism, the Center also provides targeted technical, mentoring and capacity development support through the INCKED @ IOM initiative – the Capacity and Knowledge Development Initiative for innovation. Created in collaboration with the UNICEF Office of Innovation, it trains innovators on topics such as systems thinking, anticipation, human-centered design and business modeling. This initiative aims to empower innovators to use innovation as a tool to address the complex challenges of migration, while fostering a culture of creativity and collaboration.
The Center is launched alongside knowledge management strategy of IOM 2024-2028, which aims to strengthen IOM’s approach to knowledge management. This strategy ensures that lessons learned and good practices are systematically taken into account in decisions and programming. The strategy also aims to address knowledge management gaps identified by IOM staff during consultations, as well as to define a clear vision to strengthen knowledge sharing and help improve outcomes overall of the organization.
The Knowledge Management Strategy 2024-28 plays a central role in the implementation of the IOM Strategic Plan 2024-2028, which establishes learning and innovation as key enablers in achieving the IOM’s strategic objectives. ‘Organization.

What is the uniqueness of IOM’s Center for Innovation compared to other innovation initiatives?
## Interview with Ugochi Daniels on the Launch of IOM’s Center for Innovation
**Interviewer:** Welcome to the show Ms. Daniels. IOM just launched its first-ever Center for Innovation. Could you tell us a little bit about it and what inspired its creation?
**Ugochi Daniels:** It’s a pleasure to be here.
We are incredibly excited about the Center for Innovation. It’s a dynamic platform and financing mechanism designed to find transformative solutions for the complex challenges facing migrants and displacement situations around the world. The idea stems from IOM’s commitment to innovation and learning as core pillars of our strategic approach to migration. We recognized the need for a dedicated space to incubate, pilot, and scale innovative ideas that can truly make a difference in the lives of migrants
**Interviewer:** So, what type of solutions is the Center looking to support?
**Ugochi Daniels:** The possibilities are vast! We’re interested in supporting projects across the entire spectrum of migration issues, from finding sustainable solutions for e-waste management in refugee camps like the incredible work being done in Uganda [[1](https://medialib.iom.int/gallery/474/474)]to developing innovative healthcare delivery models for remote communities in Nigeria.
The key is to empower innovators from all walks of life, including IOM staff, partners, communities, and migrants themselves, to co-create solutions that are relevant, sustainable, and impactful.
**Interviewer:** This sounds truly groundbreaking. How will the Center collaborate with partners and leverage their expertise?
**Ugochi Daniels:** Building strong partnerships is at the heart of the Center’s mission.
We’re actively reaching out to organizations from all sectors - governments, UN agencies, NGOs, the private sector, and academic institutions. We believe that by working together, we can pool resources, knowledge, and expertise to accelerate the development and implementation of innovative solutions globally.
**Interviewer:** What makes the Center unique compared to other innovation initiatives?
**Ugochi Daniels**: While other organizations certainly focus on innovation, what sets us apart is IOM’s unique perspective and expertise in migration. We bring a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities that come with migration, which allows us to identify and nurture solutions that are truly tailored to the needs of migrants and displaced populations.
Furthermore, we are deeply committed to knowledge sharing and capacity building. Our INCKED @ IOM initiative, developed in collaboration with the UNICEF Office of Innovation, will train innovators on essential skillsets like systems thinking, human-centered design, and business modeling.
**Interviewer: ** This is incredibly encouraging. What is your vision for the future of the Center? What impact do you hope to see?
**Ugochi Daniels:** We envision a future where the Center for Innovation becomes a global hub for transformative solutions in migration. We want to see innovative ideas implemented and scaled up, leading to tangible improvements in the lives of migrants and displaced populations
Whether it’s ensuring access to basic services, creating economic opportunities, or promoting social inclusion, we believe that innovation has the power to unlock a more humane and sustainable future for migration.
