IOC revokes recognition of AIBA

The International Olympic Committee removed the International Boxing Federation from the list of recognized international federations. The decision was taken unanimously at the IOC session in Paris.

70 people participated in the vote, 69 people voted in favor of canceling the recognition, and one voted against it.

A decision was also taken in favour of keeping boxing on the programme for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

In 2019, the International Olympic Committee temporarily withdrew the recognition status of AIBA over allegations that the latter had failed to increase financial transparency and ensure the integrity of referees was not monitored.

The International Olympic Committee has called on AIBA to make reforms and removed it from organising the boxing tournament at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Later, the Olympic Committee expressed doubts about the transparency of the AIBA administration.

Since the end of 2020, the International Boxing Federation has been headed by Russian Umar Kremlev.

The International Boxing Federation refused to follow the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee to ban athletes from Russia and Belarus from competing in its tournaments without any restrictions.

The boxing federations of the United States, Great Britain, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and the Philippines withdrew from the International Boxing Federation in protest at the creation of a new international organization called World Boxing.

On June 5, AIBA sent a letter to the IOC, informing it that all requirements for the restoration of rights had been met, but the IOC Executive Committee recommended that AIBA be stripped of recognition.

On June 15, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) registered AIBA’s appeal, and AIBA, along with the appeal, filed an urgent request to suspend the implementation of the recommendation until the arbitration panel makes a final decision, but CAS rejected this request.
