Sustainable and comprehensive fiber optic infrastructures for Austria
Salzburg (OTS) – Host and President of Open Fiber Austria, Igor Brusic, invites you to exciting lectures and business talks with international key note speakers on the following topics:
As is well known, the government’s Broadband Strategy 2030 aims to provide Austria with symmetrical, gigabit-capable access networks across the board by 2030. With the first funding call, 900 million euros were awarded, with which the federal government should succeed in moving Austria from the bottom places to the front in a European comparison. The 2nd funding call is planned and required for this year. Brusic further appeals to political decision-makers to ensure that the coming funding flows strictly into the expansion of open and sustainable fiber optic infrastructures. “This public funding will ensure fiber optic connections are available in all communities. If area coverage is not taken into account from the start, this will lead to time delays and higher expansion costs in previously untouched areas,” said Igor Brusic. This challenge affects both small rural communities and larger cities in Austria.
Comprehensive coverage is also absolutely necessary for the board of directors of Salzburg AG: “As Salzburg AG, we know exactly: our future is digital. A comprehensive supply of gigabit-capable internet is the decisive key to the competitiveness of a region and contributes significantly to strengthening the economy,” emphasizes Salzburg AG Chief Technology Officer Herwig Struber. “We as Salzburg AG are already achieving the goal of the Federal Ministry’s broadband strategy of enabling nationwide offers for gigabit-capable connections (in Salzburg) by the end of 2025,” continued Struber.
In Salzburg, a lot has been invested in providing fast internet in recent years. State Councilor Josef Schwaiger: “The information highways are the freight routes of the 21st century. They ensure development and progress in rural areas too. The federal government’s first broadband billion was used optimally in Salzburg; there are only a few smaller areas with slow internet. 94 percent of households surf at 100 Mbit/s, 89 percent at 1000 Mbit/s. But we don’t stop, we want to get even better and eliminate the last white spots. We will certainly succeed in this with the 22 million euros from the federal government from the second broadband billion and an additional 11.5 million euros from the state of Salzburg. Concrete projects are currently being developed with our partners,” emphasizes State Councilor Josef Schwaiger.
