China and Robots: An Investment in the Future or a Dangerous Game?

Local authorities intend to make the country’s capital a world center of innovation.

The Chinese government continues to actively develop the domestic robotics industry. This time, the Beijing authorities announced foundation with a budget of 10 billion yuan (1.4 billion dollars or 130 billion rubles) to stimulate developments in the field of robotics in the capital of the country.

The fund’s funds are planned to be used to support start-ups, develop commercial solutions, and merge and acquire local companies in the industry. In addition, the fund will provide subsidies to manufacturers of key components for robots, such as semiconductors and operating systems.

Earlier this year, China’s Ministry of Industry and Informatization identified 10 priority industries for robotics automation. By 2025, the country plans to increase the robotization density to 500 units per 10,000 workers.

According to the International Federation of Robotics, in 2021 China ranked fifth in the world in industrial robot density, overtaking Taiwan, the United States, Hong Kong and Sweden. The number of newly installed robots last year increased by 44% compared to 2020 and amounted to 243.3 thousand units.

Thus, China continues to increase its leadership in the development and implementation of robotics. The large-scale state support of the industry by the country’s authorities will allow the Celestial Empire to become one of the world leaders in this promising area in the coming years.
