Investigation requested into the raid where the Paraguayan deputy died

Political leaders in Paraguay On Monday, the Paraguayan police requested an investigation into a raid in which a pro-government Paraguayan deputy died in his home in the city of Pedro Juan Caballero (north), during an alleged exchange of gunfire with the agents who participated in the operation.

The operation, authorized by a criminal judge in the early hours of Monday as part of an investigation into alleged money laundering, ended with the death of deputy Eulalio ‘Lalo’ Gomes, of the ruling Colorado Party.

When questioned by journalists, the president of Congress, Basilio Núñez, of the ruling party, said that it is necessary to determine “on what basis the institutions acted, if they were supported by the Constitution and the laws.”

Núñez said that the incident will have repercussions, given that it involved a sitting legislator. He also said that they are considering calling a closed session with the participation of the various actors to obtain official information about what happened.

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Raúl Latorre, said that it is “impossible not to recognize the seriousness of the incident.” “We demand a clear, thorough and transparent investigation into what happened and those responsible,” Latorre told reporters.
