Thursday evening, at the municipal council of Bastogne, the mayor Benoît Lutgen announced that he had taken, on June 23, a police order to prohibit the operation of all the shooting lines of the club located at number 26 of the Covered Market in Bastogne “due to serious security problems”.

“The police report, transmitted to the governor, mentions impacts of projectiles noted on a building of the zoning, namely the company Lambert Frères, located in the axis, at the back of the shooting range, specified the mayor. On June 1, a ball was found in the floor in front of this business. On May 25, in the morning, two workers busy working on the site of this company, heard two whistles pass above their heads. However, the manager of the stand told the police that, that day, shootings took place at the same time at the end of the morning.

A new impact was noted on June 23 on the cladding of the same company in Bastogne zone 1. “That day, a bullet was once more found at the foot of the facade of the same company, added Benoît Lutgen. The governor was contacted and his services forwarded the file to the Luxembourg public prosecutor’s office. The closure order was issued pending investigation of the case and because of the risks to public safety. Indeed, no risk should be taken for the safety of citizens. So far, fortunately, no injuries have been reported.”

An investigation has been opened to determine whether these shots come from inside the shooting range or from outside. In the second case, it would be a malicious person who would do so to harm the club. The municipality, owner of the building, has appointed a ballistics expert to shed light on this case. Be that as it may, the shooting circle must provide proof that the installations are in conformity and that no projectile can come out of them. The mayor further clarified that “compressed air shots are once more authorized because they present no risk and the use of weapons remains prohibited.”

The police order was approved by the majority and councilor Jessica Mayon. The representatives of the Positive Citizens minority abstained. On behalf of his group, Councilor Ludovic Moinet explained that he understood the decision but that, on the one hand, the first police report contained inconsistencies, on the other hand, that the facts are not convincing enough to lead closing of the shooting range.
