The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating reports of power loss in the Kia EV6 electric crossover. The news comes weeks following the agency began investigating similar issues with the EV’s close cousin, the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The investigation might potentially involve some 20,000 EV6 vehicles.
NHTSA says it has received 11 reports so far regarding this issue. As with the Ioniq 5, some owners report hearing a popping noise that precedes a loss of power, sometimes partial, sometimes total. This phenomenon would be linked to a malfunction of the integrated charge control unit (ICCU) which supplies the vehicle’s batteries.
In one case, an owner said he heard the noise and then experienced a loss of power. He was told by his Kia dealership service center that the diagnostics indicated that the ICCU needed to be replaced.
In the case of the Ioniq 5, Hyundai indicated in an initial evaluation that a power surge damaged the transistors, preventing the vehicles 12-volt battery from charging.
For now, the agency is investigating the severity of the problem and its extent. The manufacturer might decide to carry out a recall itself, before the NHTSA reaches conclusions.
