Investigating Police Violence: Activists File Complaints with Committee P

Around twenty activists from the Code Red civil disobedience movement decided to file a complaint with Committee P (the Permanent Committee for Control of Police Services, the “police of police”) for police violence. Several activists say they were injured during police intervention during Operation Code Red, which aimed to block Antwerp-Deurne airport and the warehouse of e-commerce giant Alibaba in Liège.

The movement believes that the police reaction was disproportionate: “Our activists remained non-violent,” declares Chloé Mikolajczak, spokesperson for Code Rouge. Police brutality and misconduct once morest peaceful protesters deeply undermines our right to protest and our democracy.”

At the heart of the Code Red operation at Alibaba in Liège: “I am terrified. But I am even more afraid of inaction in the face of climate change”

Among the activists, two had broken arms, one of which required surgery. Those placed in cells say they have been denied access to life-saving medication or medical assistance, although all detainees are normally entitled to this. People who received pepper spray in their eyes say they were not treated in cells.

Legal observers, as well as Vinz Kanté, a journalist, present during the operation, also say they suffered violence from the police even though they were clearly identifiable as observers or members of the press. Vinz Kanté also announced his intention to file a complaint with Committee P.

The Code Red movement states that it has numerous images to support its action. He announces that he is studying the possibility of also filing complaints with the courts and the General Inspectorate.
