Worm found in snakes alive in human brain. An 8 cm long worm was found in the brain of a 64-year-old woman in New South Wales, Australia. The incident that happened last year in Canberra Hospital in Australia is now known to the outside world.
Ophidascaris robertsii is a parasite found in carpet pythons, an active python found in Australia. Dr. Sanjaya Senanayake, an infectious disease expert at Canberra Hospital, said that this is the first time it has been found in humans.
The woman first came to the hospital in January 2021. After seeking treatment for diarrhea and abdominal pain, they left the hospital. But following three weeks they started coughing. Night sweats also started. Then came back to the hospital. By then, the woman was suffering from memory loss and depression. An MRI scan of the brain revealed a lesion on the left side. When it was opened for biopsy, a live red thread-like worm was found.
The worm will be released in June 2022. When its DNA was tested, it was found to be a parasite found in snakes. The researchers believe that the worm larvae may have entered the woman’s body by eating edible leaves. They also think that the larvae may have been present in the snake droppings that fell on the leaves. Details of the discovery have been published in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.
