Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich, 56, said on the 28th (local time) that the owner of the English Premier League (EPL) Chelsea is helping to negotiate peace with Ukraine.
Abramovich’s spokesperson said in a statement: “The Ukrainian side has been contacted for assistance to achieve a peaceful resolution and has been working to help since then,” Archyde.com and Bloomberg reported.
The spokesperson added that he apologized for not commenting on the situation or his involvement as it was a sensitive time.
A Jewish press first reported that Abramovich had intervened in the talks, saying Ukraine had asked for aid through Jewish figures.
It is not yet clear what Abramovich’s role will be.
He is a Jew and has Israeli citizenship.
Abramovitz announced on the 26th that he would not be involved in decision-making by handing over the management of the Chelsea club to the club’s public interest foundation.
“I have always made decisions with the interests of the club in mind,” he said in a statement at the time.
At the time, he did not comment on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Abramović, known for being close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, has recently been under pressure to withdraw from Chelsea.
