Introducing the Smartphone Screen Repair Bonus: Encouraging Sustainability and Saving Money in France

From January 1, 2024, the State will put in place a repair bonus of 25 euros to encourage individuals to have their broken smartphone screens repaired, announced the Minister of Ecological Transition Christophe Béchu.

This amount will be deducted from the repair, provided that it is carried out by a specially approved repairer, he specified on M6.

Today, 15 million smartphones are sold each year in France and 1.5 million are subject to repair, underlined the minister, noting that “repairing instead of changing means avoiding drawing on resources, it means avoiding CO2 emissions and also an issue of purchasing power.”

The “repair bonus” was implemented at the end of 2022 for a series of electrical and electronic equipment. It ranges from 10 to 45 euros depending on the product, and is financed by “eco-contributions” included in the price of all devices. While the demand often concerns mobile phones, the Consumption Logement Cadre de Vie (CLCV) association, responsible for managing an observatory of the repair fund, pleaded for support for the repair of broken screens, which had until now been excluded.

Today, the number of approved repairers for all this equipment is approaching 5,000, and the minister hopes for 7,000 to 8,000 by the end of the year.
