The McLaren 720S is no more. Here is its replacement, the 750S. If you find that the two cars look alike like two drops of water or almost, you are not wrong. In fact, McLaren claims that around 30% of the components on the 750S are new or modified.
The latter is intended to be 30 kg lighter for a total weight of 1,389 kg. New 10-spoke forged wheels (-13.8 kg) and bucket seats with carbon fiber shell (-17.5 kg) are available, but the company also highlights the center-exit exhaust (inspired by the McLaren P1), the lighter windshield and instrument cluster.
Weighing only 49 kg more than the coupe, the 750S Spider convertible has a retractable hardtop that opens in less than 11 seconds up to a speed of 50 km/h.
More powerful than its predecessor, the new 750S features the same 4-litre twin-turbo V8 with a few exceptions. For example, the pistons come from the 765LT and an additional fuel pump was installed. The result is 740 horsepower (+30) and 590 lb-ft of torque (+22), all routed to the rear wheels.
According to McLaren, the 750S is capable of 0-100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and 0-200 km/h in 7.2 seconds, also aided by gear optimization in the seven-speed sequential transmission.
Engineers then reworked the suspension, widened the front track and increased steering sensitivity in an effort to increase handling. Speaking of the chassis, the system that lifts the front of the car can now do so in just four seconds, which is faster than with any other McLaren.
750S buyers who want to do a lot of track riding can opt for upgraded track brakes, designed with ceramic discs and one-piece calipers taken from the Senna, as well as a new brake booster, vacuum pump and brake technology. integrated caliper cooling from Formula 1. Let’s not forget the Pirelli P ZERO Trofeo R tires designed for the track and the ultra-light titanium wheel bolts.
Going back to the design, you will notice that the nose (including the lower spoiler), the headlights, the openings on the sides as well as the rear spoiler (larger and lighter) are slightly different from those of the 720S.
The interior does not change much either, apart from the seats and the instrument cluster. On either side of the latter, there are the controls for selecting the propulsion and driving modes, which means that the driver can alternate between Comfort, Sport and Track while keeping his hands on the wheel. Not to be missed: the option of the rear cargo bed which includes a small skylight allowing a glimpse of the V8.
Canadian pricing is yet to be announced, but McLaren is already accepting orders. In addition to its Laval dealership, remember that the British brand recently opened its doors in Quebec City in the same facilities as Maserati.
