‘Golf Emperor’ Tiger Woods (49, USA), who ended his 27-year sponsorship contract with Nike last year, joined hands with TaylorMade to unveil a new clothing brand ‘Sunday Red (SDR)’ line. TaylorMade, one of the world’s top three golf equipment brands, was acquired by Centroid Investment, a Korean private equity fund (PEF) management company, for approximately 1.8 trillion won in 2022. SDR is the name that comes from Woods’ golf attire, where he wears a red shirt and black pants on Sunday, the final day of the golf tournament. The image of a tiger running was also included in the logo. The unveiling of Woods’ new clothing brand was held in Pacific Palisades, California, where the tournament venue is located, on the 13th, two days before the PGA Tour Genesis Invitational (total prize money of $20 million). Woods will be wearing Sunday Red for the first time at this tournament.
The Genesis Invitational, sponsored by the Korean Hyundai Motor Company brand Genesis, is a special competition hosted by the Tiger Woods Foundation and hosted by Woods. Woods returns to the tour 10 months following withdrawing from the Masters Golf in April last year. On the 9th of last month, Woods announced that his sponsorship contract with Nike, which had been in effect since 1996, had ended. Afterwards, there was speculation regarding Woods’ clothing sponsor, but in the end, TaylorMade, the golf equipment brand used by Woods, became his new partner.
TaylorMade has been sponsoring clubs for Woods since 2016, when Nike closed its golf club and ball business. At the presentation that day, Woods said, “Following the opinion of his mother who believed that red was her son’s ‘power color,’ he started wearing red from his junior days and won several championships. Even following entering Stanford University, he continued to wear the red uniform, the symbol color of the university golf team. “I went out wearing it, and red naturally became my color even following I debuted as a professional.” Woods won 79 of his 82 PGA Tour wins while wearing a red shirt.
