The public should not have to rely on promises and self-commitments, but has a right to know whether products contain labor exploitation
Vienna (OTS) – Since the research by journalist Sandra Jungmann for the “Fleisch Magazin” on the domestic jewelery label BRUNA, many people have been wondering what promises made by companies with regard to human rights and environmental standards are worth. BRUNA’s statements did not calm things down either, but rather fueled the suspicion that not everything might run smoothly in the label’s supply chains.
“There is no reason why a company should not disclose its supply chain unless it has something to hide. Anyone who works so aggressively in communication with idyllic ideas of family manufactories should be particularly transparent. If BRUNA still refuses to disclose its suppliers, production facilities and working conditions, that makes us suspicious,” says Veronika Bohrn Mena, spokeswoman for the Austrian initiative for a supply chain law.
Highly profitable promises are unverifiable
In Italy in particular, where BRUNA produces its jewellery, labor exploitation is well documented, for example in fashion or food. So it’s understandable that many people are now concerned that the label’s jewelry also comes from such questionable sources. They don’t get answers to their questions, which not only leads to alienation from this company, but also shakes trust in general.
“We no longer want to be dependent on the unverifiable but highly profitable promises made by companies. We want companies to have to disclose their supply chains and face the responsibility that arises from possible abuses. So far there has been no possibility of sanctions and that has to change. This is one of the reasons why we are calling for a strong supply chain law,” concludes Veronika Bohrn Mena.
