Five years ago, work began on Janet Jackson’s 40th stage anniversary documentary. Now there is a first trailer for the film, in which her late brother Michael also plays a role. The broadcaster responsible promises the “truth” regarding the famous family.
It was five years in the making, now it’s almost time. On January 28, 2022, the American TV stations A&E and Lifetime will broadcast the first part of a major documentary regarding Janet Jackson. The occasion is the 40th stage anniversary of the 55-year-old singer.
The first long trailer for “Janet” has now been published via Twitter. The clip for the two-part documentary promises unpublished material, plenty of stars and intimate insights. And of course the famous brother Michael also plays a role.
For Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson is a “self-determined woman”, for Samuel L. Jackson “the greatest show woman” and for Whoopi Goldberg “many women in one”. The trailer for “Janet” not only boasts top-class interview partners, but also promises to look behind the facade of a versatile artist. “This is my story, the truth,” is the official subtitle.
“TV event of the decade”?
Janet Jackson is actually considered to be rather reserved in public. The documentary, which the broadcaster Lifetime prematurely proclaims as the “TV event of the decade”, is all the more surprising. The trailer heralds at least previously unreleased home video footage from the Jackson showbiz family into which Janet was born in 1966.
We see their strict father, Joseph Jackson, who pushed his children towards a music career. And of course we see her big brother Michael hovering over the documentary. When mother Katherine is supposed to talk regarding him, she is silent and tears.
Janet Jackson says she has long sought her own place in the family and in show business: “There were times when I didn’t understand where I fit in.” The documentary is also regarding taking control of her own career. That’s “Control”, the title of her third album, with which she celebrated her breakthrough as a singer in 1986.
