Sandra Torres, candidate for the presidency for the National Unity of Hope (UNE) party, provided details on Monday, April 17, regarding her government plan. In addition, she spoke regarding different issues, including the altercation that took place last weekend in Tucurú, Alta Verapaz, between supporters of that group and the Valor-Unionista coalition.
The applicant said that it is a difficult situation, sometimes unpredictable. “A non-aggression pact was signed between parties and these are things that happen surprisingly. What is not valid is the use of weapons, political violence, ”she said.
He explained that, regarding the case, what he knows is that there was a caravan from the Valor party and it passed in front of the house of the candidate for mayor of that town for the UNE, which in turn functions as headquarters, and that it is in the main Street. “Instead of continuing, the cars were parked and the altercation began. (There was) the provocation, incitement to violence that is unfortunate, ”he explained.
In Torres’s opinion, when making a mistake, the least one can do is apologize, an action that he assured was not carried out by Valor. However, he was of the opinion that “you have to turn the page”, but he reiterated that he asks that the violence not continue.
Strengthen security
When asked regarding the changes reflected in her political proposals announced in 2015 and 2019, when she also participated in the search for the Presidency, Torres stated that the same problems are observed in Guatemala, since nothing has changed.
“In 2015, I talked regarding the same problems, which are documented because there are videos. In 2019, the same problems. Today I stand on a platform or public place to speak and, (in) 2023, the worse the situation, we have regressed, ”she said.
He mentioned that, by representing the opposition in Congress, the UNE has supported initiatives to address different issues and improve the country, but “if the Government did not do its job, it is another hundred pesos.”
Separately, Torres made reference to the effects generated by insecurity, especially the collection of extortion, which he assured is the crime that is hitting the most now and affects the economy of the population.
In this context, he announced that his government plan focuses on delivering results in the first 100 days of management in this area.
As an example of the actions that would be implemented, he pointed out that the purchase of technology can be expedited, which would make it possible to have security cameras where they do not exist and set up a monitoring center.
“Who will not be able to buy? How difficult is it to get a C5 center that can gather all the indications and details to provide security through technology?”, he expressed.
In this context, he assured that the Procurement Law must be changed, which, according to his words, is not executed because it is retrograde, with an award time of 180 days. This point is part of his legislative agenda, he stressed.
Separately, he mentioned that since 2016 the law for the application of a telematic control program for prisoners was approved and it has not been implemented.
“You have to get out of people who are denounced or locked up for minor crimes. The inmates have to be relocated. How much science does that want?” said the interviewee.
He also assured that he would possibly imitate some actions of the Salvadoran president, Nayib Bukele, who has undertaken a frontal fight once morest the gangs, since it has had good results. “People feel safer, they walk on the street calmly and I want to achieve that,” he mentioned.
