Paris 2024 unveiled its official posters at the Musée d’Orsay made by French designer Ugo Gattoni and which represent a “utopian Paris” in the style of “Where’s Waldo?” “.

We didn’t expect that, but we must admit that the result is stunning. When he presented his work to us (end of February), Ugo Gattoni had no idea that journalists were discovering them for the first time. “ Until now, Games posters featured a logo on a background. For Paris 2024, we wanted to change that ” explain to us Joachim Roncin, artistic director of the Paris Games.

“That represents around 2,000 hours of work. There are regarding 30,000 characters on the poster” – Ugo Gattoni, designer

For the first time, the poster pays tribute to the Olympic and Paralympic Games. There will therefore be 2 posters that become one big one when glued, which gives it a quite impressive effect.

In the foreground, we see a diver “who has the same view as the viewer”. The Seine surrounds a condensed Paris where the gardens of Versailles are at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, which the Stade de France surrounds on the second floor. On the right, on the Paralympic part, the aerial metro is inserted into the Arc de Triomphe, buildings in the Haussmann style are also present almost everywhere on the drawing.

Work started last September

The first exchanges took place on Instagram in June 2023 and work began in September before finishing on January 19.

« That represents around 2,000 hours of work. There are approximately 30,000 characters on the poster. I started counting, but quickly stopped » confesses Ugo Gattoni. The French artist’s mission was to create a decor with the major markers of Paris 2024tell the richness of the project, all to be transcribed with the artistic touch of Ugo Gattoni.

“A surrealist universal exhibition”

The Trocadéro garden faces the ocean and the Olympic torch, which emerges from the water. A little homage to the undulations of the real version which was inspired by the ocean. Behind, the French patrol, but also the Teahupo’o wave where the surfing events will take place. At the top left, we see the port of Marseille which will welcome Belem and the Olympic torch on May 8. Top right, Stoke Mandaville, a town located in Buckinghamshire in England, cradle of the Paralympic movement. Further down on the left, you can also see the Alexandre III bridge that the Marathon Pour Tous runners cross.

French is accustomed to large works whose numerous small details are almost unspeakable when you look at them carefully. “ It is a poster which must mark and have an effect today, but which must still work in 100 years » explains the designer. The inspiration of the 1920s is widely felt. “ It’s a fanciful drawing, but with a touch of reality, a sort of utopian surrealist Paris where each monument is reinterpreted. A bit like a surreal world exhibition. »

The “Where’s Waldo” spirit with 8 mascots to find

Ugo Gattoni explains that if he had to choose a source of inspiration, it would be the French designer Jean Giraud, nicknamed Moebius, but he admits that the comparison with the drawing of “Where’s Charlie? » is quite obvious.

To the extent that the design hides 8 mascots Who ” are to be found ” explain Joachim Roncin, 4 on the Olympic poster and 4 on the Paralympics. This style of work can also be reminiscent of old “Disneyland Map” posters from the 70s.

At any rate, the drawing was made without the help of AI (unlike the poster for Roland-Garros 2024) with a stylus on a tablet and only by Ugo Gattoni, a detail that was close to the heart of artistic director Joachim Roncin to highlight “French know-how”.

A digital version?

On the official Paris 2024 posters, almost all Olympic and Paralympic disciplines are represented, including the new ones: breaking, climbing, skateboarding and surfing.

On the other hand, no French flag is present on the drawing for reasons of “neutrality”. The color code of the Games called “look of the game” was respected on the posters. A kind of pink moss also wanders through the drawing, one of the signatures of the artist Ugo Gattoni.

From March 5, the 5x4m poster will be displayed in the center of the Musée d’Orsay for a week.

The 2 posters will then be deployed throughout Paris and discussions are currently underway to display them in Greater Paris.

Of course, two models will be sold (from €20 per poster), in 30x40cm and 50x70cm. To take the merchandising a little further, the posters will also be available in coloring and puzzles. The posters might then go to the Carnavalet Museum; the Mayor of Paris is currently considering this possibility.

Paris 2024 is also considering making a digital version to be able to zoom in and appreciate every detail of the work. A collaboration with the social network Snapchat which would give a special Paris 2024 filter, is also in discussion. “A first draft will be available on March 4” explains Joachim Roncin.
