From "Politics of Smell" to Online Pairing: Teacher’s Unexpected Connection with Accused Shooter Sparks Confusion and Amusement

Dr. Ally Louks, a Cambridge-based teacher who gained viral fame for her thesis exploring the intriguing world of scent in literature, found herself unexpectedly thrust into the spotlight again, this time for a very different reason. Social media users, invested in the bizarre turn of events surrounding accused shooter Luigi Mangione, started pairing – or “shipping” – the two seemingly unlikely partners.

Louks, who initially didn’t grasp the nature of the pairing, hilariously recounted her confusion. “I saw a bunch of tweets shipping me with Luigi and I thought y’all meant the character from Mario,” she tweeted.

The online interaction fueled further amusement, culminating in the hashtag #TeamLuigi trending on X (formerly Twitter).

Mangione, a 26-year-old software engineer, shot to prominence, of all things, for allegedly shooting and killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

His insistent posts and pleas for release, as well as shared photos and stories circulating online, sparked a series of memes and resulted in widespread online conversations.

“What kind of world do we live in where internet users are pairing a Cambridge Shakespeare scholar with a suspected murderer?” one screenshot shared on social media read.
