Two technological innovations are expanding and jointly aim to transform the way people and organizations relate to each other: the Internet of Things (IoT) and the 5G network. Bringing proof of the rapid expansion of 5G to the Brazilian scenario, recent research released by the Ministry of Communications indicates that in one year of 5G implementation in Brazil, the coverage area available for installing the technology is already released to more than 140 million Brazilians (66.4% of the population).

Accompanying such growth, we see that the market for IoT solutions has grown by 18% in Brazil last yearsurpassing 8 billion reais in 2022, expected to grow at least 15% per year until 2025.

The Internet of Things, or IoT, refers to the interconnection of physical devices to the digital world, allowing them to communicate and exchange data intelligently and autonomously. The 5G network is the latest evolution of mobile communication, with faster speeds, low latency and high capacity.

With the arrival of 5G, IoT gains momentum, expanding its application possibilities. 5G enables communication between IoT devices, creating connected and intelligent environments. In Brazil the use of IoT is already a reality in 57% of companiesaccording to recently published research, and its features range from tracking deliveries to monitoring assets in the agricultural sector.

The mobile network specialist Marcus Policarpo explains how IoT technology works and its application through the “fifth generation” network.

What is IoT?

Marcus Policarpo: The Internet of Things (IoT) encompasses devices that have defined characteristics, such as the ability to receive data, connect to an external network and process information autonomously. These devices, known as “things” in IoT, are essential for building smart, connected systems. The crucial feature of IoT devices is their ability to process data autonomously or semi-autonomously, which enables intelligent actions in response to specific conditions, without direct human intervention.

For example, a refrigerator that can identify the foods inside it and automatically send a shopping list to your cell phone when something is running low. Or a home thermostat that learns what times residents are usually home and automatically adjusts the temperature to ensure comfort.

All of this makes it possible to create more connected and intelligent environments, where everything is interconnected and works more efficiently, bringing more convenience to everyday life, saving resources and improving people’s quality of life.

In summary, the Internet of Things is the technology that transforms common objects into intelligent objects, allowing them to communicate, helping to simplify or even assign to them some tasks performed by humans today.

Is there adoption of IoT devices?

Marcus Policarpo: The Internet of Things (IoT) can be applied in different environments, including homes, according to a consultancy carried out, around 40 million smart devices were sold in Latin America in 2022, which corresponds to a growth of 13%. This technology is expanding worldwide, and it is estimated a growth of 19% in 2023 in this market globally.

How is the application of IoT and 5G?

Marcus Policarpo: The application of IoT in conjunction with 5G paves the way for a series of innovations that will benefit society. A concrete example is the concept of smart cities, where sensors connected at various urban points enable more efficient management of public services. These IoT sensors and devices connect to the 5G network, enabling fast and reliable data transmission.

For example, smart light fixtures that automatically adjust to the environment, saving energy and improving street lighting. In addition, sensors that can monitor the amount of garbage in the dumps, optimizing collection and reducing costs for city halls. This 5G connection results in a more sustainable and pleasant city for its residents.

Wearable devices connected to the 5G network allow remote monitoring of patients’ health, facilitating access to real-time information and allowing more assertive decision-making in the medical field. The connection to 5G is crucial in this context, as its speed and latency characteristics ensure that health data is transmitted efficiently and securely, providing more accurate and accessible remote medical monitoring.

In the field of entertainment and education, IoT together with 5G provides new interactive and immersive experiences. Games become more realistic and immersive thanks to fast data transmission over the 5G network. In addition, learning becomes more dynamic, with instant access to educational content in high definition, allowing real-time interaction with the resources made available by educators.

In view of the information shared above, it is clear that the synergy between IoT and 5G is transforming the way people deal with everyday situations. As technology continues to advance, we envision a future that is increasingly connected and full of innovations that will make tasks more efficient, health more accessible and leisure time more exciting.
