International School Feeding: Mary’s Meals Enables Education as a Basic Human Right

the Power of School Meals: Fueling Education and Transforming Lives

On International Day of Education, a day dedicated to celebrating education as a fundamental human right, the United Nations shines a spotlight on the vital role it plays in building a more sustainable and equitable world. Yet, for millions of children, access to education remains a distant dream.Nearly 700 million people worldwide endure the hardships of extreme poverty, surviving on less than $2.15 per day. Education offers a path out of this cycle, but a formidable obstacle often stands in the way: hunger.

School meals have emerged as a powerful solution, providing not only nourishment but also a compelling reason for children from disadvantaged communities to attend school regularly. For 22 years, the international organization MaryS Meals has been dedicated to this cause, partnering with communities in 16 countries to deliver daily meals to nearly 2.5 million children. “Mary’s Meals knows that school feeding programs support educational achievement,” explains Terry Bonet, Executive Director of Mary’s Meals USA. “Our research across multiple countries demonstrates the positive impact of feeding children in an educational habitat. Healthy meals not only entice children to attend school but also support their physical, cognitive, and educational development. This allows them to focus on learning and reach their full potential.”

The urgency of this issue is amplified by stark realities. The World Food Program reports that 343 million people are facing acute food insecurity, while UNESCO reveals that 250 million children remain out of school. In regions grappling with conflict, climate crises, or economic instability, a school meal can be a lifeline, providing not just sustenance but also a sense of belonging and stability in a safe and nurturing learning environment. The United Nations recognizes the crucial role of school meals in fostering education, officially including them as a key indicator under SDG 4: quality Education in 2023. Food security is now acknowledged as a fundamental element in creating inclusive and effective learning environments where all children can thrive.

Education is empowerment. It equips children with the tools they need to shape their futures, break the cycle of poverty, and contribute to a more just and equitable world. by ensuring that every child has access to nutritious meals, we can unlock their potential and pave the way for a brighter future for all.
