Saudi Arabia has invited more than 30 countries to a two-day international mediation conference starting Saturday in Jeddah, following Turkey and other countries’ efforts to mediate and negotiate a ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine war.
It came following the wealthy Gulf monarchy announced on Friday night that “security advisers from brotherly countries” were meeting in Jeddah to discuss the “Russia-Ukraine crisis”, without naming the countries involved.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said late Friday that the meeting was important, as he met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ahead of the summit in Jeddah.
Including Western allies who support Ukraine and other countries participated in the meeting. In addition to Russia, the BRICS countries China, India, Brazil and South Africa all participated in this meeting.
China sent special envoy Li Hui to attend, and Beijing said it would continue to play a constructive role in the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis.
The analysis pointed out that the participation of many countries in this Russian-Ukrainian war mediation meeting shows that Saudi Arabia is conducting international mediation and contributing to the search for a peaceful solution. Countries look forward to restoring peace and stability in the world and ensuring the security of the food market.
Agence France-Presse pointed out that Saudi Arabia has close ties with Moscow and also maintains good relations with Kiev. The world’s largest oil exporter maintains a neutral stance and seeks to enhance its international status by mediating the Russia-Ukraine war. Saudi Arabia has recently begun improving relations with its rivals Qatar and Turkey, and this year began engaging with Iran and Syria.
