This May Day, in particular, is a time for reflection. edit
The date and celebration of International Labor Day date back to 1886 following a workers’ strike in Chicago, who claimed to reduce the daily journey of work from 17 hours to eight hours. Clashes with the police resulted in workers being killed, injured and arrested. If things have changed in labor relations, much is due to the organized union movement.
However, the struggle for rights is perennial. There will always be loopholes in the legislation, bad faith on the part of the employer and weakness on the part of union leaders. With the ongoing structural changes in recent decades, unions have lost strength and deplorable working conditions have once once more been in the news here and around the world.
During the military dictatorship in Brazil, a union leader became a world reference for his firmness and skill in negotiations. When he realized that the struggle for social inequality went beyond the union movement, Lula and a considerable portion of different segments of society created the Workers’ Party. To give visibility and voice to the party, Lula was elected constituent federal deputy. The PT grew and in a few years became the largest political party in Latin America.
Realizing the limitations of a deputy, or senator, to change what needed to be changed, Lula opted for the path that might give him this condition: the presidency of the Republic – by voting! There were four attempts without ever putting the result of the polls under suspicion. He never regretted and much less surrendered. With the time he had strengthened the party, he gave visibility to his proposals and traveled the world telling his extraordinary life story.
In a short time, Lula became a world leader. The only president with three terms in a democratic country. As everyone knows, there were only four because Moro and his gang wouldn’t let them. This brief report on Lula, on Labor Day, has to do with the visible prejudice on the part of society towards him. Its global importance is unquestionable, but there are some that don’t want to see it. The facts follow.
His first 100 days in office reinforce my narrative: there are few leaders who manage to set up the agenda that Lula set up. He has been to Argentina, Uruguay, the USA, China, Portugal, Spain, Saudi Arabia and has already received the German Prime Minister, Olaf Scholz, in Brasilia. Soon will be Macron’s visit.
Unlike the other, Lula relates very well with the outside world. Like few others, she knows how to define priorities, without neglecting serious internal problems. She was present in all tragedies caused by the heavy rains that fell in the country, knowing the importance of being together with those affected in these moments of suffering. Regarding the acts of terrorism on the 8th, when vandals destroyed the buildings that symbolized the powers of the Republic, in a threat to democracy, Lula promptly decreed federal intervention in Brasília, bringing the security that society expected in the face of a day of terror.
Therefore, this May Day, in particular, is a time for reflection. Lula’s visit to China was remarkable. For the first time, the strict Chinese protocol was broken to welcome you to the sound of Novos Tempos, by Ivan Lins. In Portugal he received a standing ovation wherever he went. In Spain, his commitment to peace between Russia and Ukraine was on the cover of the main Spanish newspaper. Finally, a brief summary of a Brazilian union leader who makes us proud of his successful journey. His flaws can and should be commented on, but not out of prejudice. Hate and prejudice together lead any country to backwardness.
