Three beekeepers from the province of Liège and another from that of Luxembourg won the four gold medals on Friday in the international competition “Honeys from here and elsewhere”, organized by the CARI association and Apaq-W , which promotes quality agriculture in Wallonia.
The 45 members of the jury, who tasted more than 70 honeys from four different countries, also awarded 14 silver and 12 bronze medals, which were presented by the Walloon Minister of Agriculture Willy Borsus, in Mont- Saint-Guibert.
As for the gold, it went to Christophe Cloze (province of Liège) for his all-flower summer honey, to Alexandre Bernier (Bombaye) for spring rapeseed honey, to Norbert Gazon (Waimes) for his colza honey. summer honeydew and to Patricia Jacquemin (Nobressart) for her spring dandelion honey.
Among the 73 participating honeys, 53 were presented by Walloon beekeepers, five by producers from the Brussels Region and 15 by French, Algerian and Rwandan beekeepers.
On the occasion of the medal ceremony, the Minister of Agriculture recalled that Wallonia currently has 39,000 hives and nearly 4,000 beekeepers, who must face, with the support of Wallonia, the two challenges represented by the presence varroa, a mite parasitic on bees and the Asian hornet.
Organizer of the annual competition, CARI (Apicultural Research and Information Center) was created in 1983 by researchers from UCLouvain. In particular, he carries out analyzes of honey samples, and develops projects linked to beekeeping, pollinators, etc. He also participated in the creation of a “Walloon honey” label, pending recognition as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) by the European authorities.
