International Francophonie Day: More than 300 million speakers on 5 continents

More than 300 million speakers of the French language on the five continents celebrate, this March 20, 2022, the international day of the Francophonie (JIF) under the theme of the Francophonie of the future.

This day is celebrated every year throughout the world, particularly in French-speaking countries, but also in those where the French language is less widespread.

It recalls the birth of Niamey in Niger, in 1970, under the will of the founding fathers Lopold Sdar Senghor from Senegal, the Tunisian Habib Bourguiba, Hamani Diori from Niger as well as Prince Norodom Sihanouk from Cambodia, the Cultural and Technical Cooperation Agency (ACCT), which later became the Organization internationale de la Francophonie (OIF).

This year’s theme, La Francophonie de l’avenir, emphasizes La Francophonie’s support for young people and their aspirations, particularly in the areas of entrepreneurship, digital technology and sustainable development.

It is officially celebrated, this year, in Duba, as part of the OIF program for the universal exhibition which began in October 2021, with the program of conferences “Inspirations francophones” to promote innovations and young talents from the Francophonie of the future, screenings of films supported by the OIF, an official ceremony in the presence of the Secretary General of La Francophonie, and a major Francophonie concert.
