Gianni Infantino, President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), sent two letters to the Palestinian and Israeli federations, in which he expressed his condolences to the victims of the violent events of the past days.
Infantino said, through his Instagram account, on Friday: “I would like to express, on behalf of the International Federation and the entire international football community, our sincere condolences to the Palestinian Football Association and the Israeli Football Association, in light of the horrific acts of violence that occurred over the past days.”
He added: “It is as heartbreaking as it is shocking to see a region – whose people have suffered such profound suffering over a very long period – suffering even more. The world of football stands steadfast in its solidarity with the people of Palestine and Israel, and with all the innocent victims who have paid an unspeakable price.”
He explained: “FIFA joins the call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the immediate alleviation of the suffering of the peoples of Palestine and Israel.”
He added: “We know that football cannot solve the world’s problems, but it can play a small role in sending a light of hope, where there is only darkness in the future. “Football shows that it is possible to bring people together in an environment of mutual respect, work as a means of peace, and ultimately reconciliation, even when this may seem impossible to all but a few.”
He said: “I would like to stress that FIFA will do everything in its power to assist you in your relief efforts and restore peace and hope to your people, now and in the future.”
