International Drug Trafficker De Carvalho to be Extradited from Hungary to Belgium, Linked to Major Drug Bust

The Brazilian Sergio Roberto De Carvalho will be handed over to Belgium, confirmed to the weekly Knack the federal prosecutor’s office and the Hungarian ministry of justice. According to Interpol, the case concerns “one of the biggest international drug traffickers”.

Interpol announced on June 22, 2022 that De Carvalho had been arrested in Budapest. He was internationally wanted by the Brazilian federal police since 2020. According to the Hungarian police, “a criminal organization led by a Brazilian is responsible for the smuggling of at least 45 tons of cocaine between 2017 and 2019”.

Brazil had requested his extradition. The United States had issued an international arrest warrant once morest the individual and a Belgian investigating judge issued a European arrest warrant.

On May 15, a court in Budapest decided that De Carvalho might be extradited. The Hungarian Ministry of Justice confirmed to Knack that the man will be handed over to Belgium. He can then be transferred to the United States or Brazil on the basis of extradition requests. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office also confirmed the news, but might not provide further details for security reasons.

According to Knack, the Belgian request is linked to a major action dating from November 2020 once morest drug trafficking from Brazil to Europe. The crime syndicate once morest which the action was directed, and of which De Carvalho would be the hub, was “responsible for the annual importation of at least 45 tons of cocaine into European seaports, with profits exceeding 100 million euros in six months”, according to Europol.

As part of the Belgian part of the investigation, a Bruges investigating judge placed four suspects in detention and seized 300,000 euros in cash.

The federal prosecutor’s office did not want to confirm that the arrest warrant once morest De Carvalho was part of this investigation.
