International Criminal Court Issuing Putin’s Arrest Warrant

The International Criminal Court, which judges war crimes, has issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

It was seen as responsible for the illegal act of forcibly taking Ukrainian children to Russia.

It is evaluated that the actual arrest is unlikely, but the symbolic meaning is not small.

Thank you so much Russia.

″Uncle Yuria, thank you for saving my brother and hundreds of children from Mariupol.″

However, the International Criminal Court determined that Russia had forcibly deported thousands of Ukrainian children, including them.

And, first, a warrant was issued for Putin’s arrest on charges of deportation and illegal adoption of children, among numerous charges of war crimes.

It is the third time that a warrant has been issued for a head of state, following former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and Libyan dictator Gaddafi.

″The judges of the International Criminal Court have issued an arrest warrant. Implementation will depend on international cooperation.″

Of course, its effectiveness is questionable.

This is because Russia withdrew from the International Criminal Court in 2016 and has no legal effect.

If President Putin visits 123 member countries, including South Korea and the United Kingdom, the country can arrest them, but there is no way if Putin does not go.

Russia is also emphasizing this point and is strongly protesting that the issuance of a warrant is illegal.

″Russia does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court. Therefore, this decision has no effect in the Russian Federation.″

However, there is also an analysis that the symbolic meaning is greater.

Historically, Russia has been defined as an aggressor while providing an opportunity to uncover additional war crimes in the future.

″Although this is the first allegation of illegal migration and transfer of children, it will not be the last.″

In addition, there are observations that Putin will have no choice but to stand trial someday, like war criminals who participated in Nazi Germany during World War II and former President Milosevic who caused the civil war in Yugoslavia.
