Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan said on Sunday, in response to a question about the ruling of the International Court of Justice in the case against Israel, that the international community must apply international humanitarian law “to everyone.”
Prince Faisal added, in a joint press conference with his Egyptian counterpart, that what is required is that Israel adhere to international law.
During its session in The Hague, Netherlands, the International Court of Justice, on Friday, kept alive the genocide accusation filed by South Africa against Israel and refused to drop it. The court ordered Israel to take all measures in its power to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza.
The International Court of Justice demanded that Israel take steps to reduce Palestinian deaths in its attack on Gaza, as well as submit a report within one month showing its compliance.
The court did not go so far as to order a ceasefire in Gaza, as South Africa requested in its lawsuit, but it called on Israel to limit the number of deaths and damage resulting from its military attack on the small coastal enclave.
South Africa welcomed the court’s decision, and the country’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa, said that he expected Israel to abide by the International Court of Justice’s ruling by taking measures to prevent genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza.
For its part, Israel strongly denied the accusations against it of committing genocide in Gaza, but the court rejected Israel’s request to drop the case.
The war between Israel and Hamas broke out in October as a result of an unprecedented attack carried out by the Palestinian movement, classified as a terrorist, on Israel from the Gaza Strip, which resulted in the killing of 1,140 people, most of them civilians and including women and children, according to the Israeli authorities.
During the attack, about 250 people were kidnapped, 132 of whom are still detained in the Gaza Strip, and at least 28 are likely to have died.
On the other hand, Israel responded to the worst attack in its history with an air and ground campaign on Gaza, and pledged to “eliminate” Hamas.
Its military campaign resulted in the deaths of more than 26,000 people in the Gaza Strip, according to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health.
