The hackathon is being held for the first time in the history of the International Archives Congress, and the winners are awarded prizes worth 20,000 US dollars to the winning university team, and 10,000 US dollars to the winning high school team.
Hamad Al-Mutairi, Director of the Archives Department at the National Archives and Library, and Co-Chair of the International Council on Archives Congress Program, said in statements to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, that the “International Council on Archives Hackathon” initiative, which was launched yesterday, extends over 3 days, and we have received many requests. From schools and universities to participate in the hackathon, with applications open, all applications were evaluated, and the best offers were selected to participate in this unique educational and knowledge event that is held within the activities of the Congress of the International Council on Archives – Abu Dhabi 2023.
He explained that the students participating in the hackathon are facing many challenges related to the archive sector and document management in general, and the participating teams will deal with these challenges and come up with innovative initiatives and projects that contribute to resolving these issues that concern the archive sector, whether at the local or global level.
He stressed that young people today deal with all digital systems and advanced technological solutions, and we look forward to benefiting from their capabilities and the innovative way they deal with all available information in order to enrich the archival sector.
He expressed his confidence in coming up with many innovative initiatives and projects that will be applied practically, pointing out that the students participating in the hackathon are studying different specializations and have advanced ideas regarding the developmental management of records in order to transform them into data and a knowledge system that benefits the world.
For their part, a number of students participating in the “International Council on Archives Hackathon” said that the archival sector is replete with a range of opportunities that enhance young people’s interest in joining work in it, especially with its tendency during the current period to rely on advanced technologies in order to provide an advanced system of Records and documents related to the history of countries.
They expressed their happiness to participate in this pioneering initiative, which gives them the opportunity to think creatively and imaginatively in finding solutions to many of the challenges facing the archival sector. It also allows them to adopt their initiatives and turn them into practical projects that are implemented in the archival sector in the country.
The current session of the International Council on Archives Congress is the largest in the history of the international event and is held under the slogan “Enriching Knowledge Societies,” and brings together an elite group of experts and specialists in the field of archives, along with thought leaders from around the world, in order to explore the transformative capabilities of providing information and access to it. The work of Congress focuses on five themes, which are “Peace and Tolerance,” “Emerging Technologies – Electronic Records and Solutions,” “Trust and Evidence,” “Availability and Memories,” and “Sustainable Knowledge and a Sustainable Planet… Archives and Climate Change.”
The exhibition accompanying the Congress was organized, with the participation of more than 60 exhibitors from 35 countries and more than 350 speakers and representatives from more than 135 countries, in addition to the presentation of more than 310 research papers.
Tomorrow, as part of the Congress activities, the “International Council Congress Youth Forum” will be launched, which provides members of the younger generation with a platform to discuss a number of important topics and issues, most notably sustainability, and discuss ways to confront the challenges the world is witnessing by improving the efficiency of information and knowledge management.
