The “Institute of Ancient Theatre” of the University of Patras in collaboration with the Postgraduate Program for “Ancient Greek Theatre” of the Department of Theater Studies are organizing on May 24th and 25th an International Conference on “Ancient drama in education. From antiquity to today”, which will take place at the Conference Center of the University of Patras and the Archaeological Museum of Patras (Friday 24 and Saturday 25 May, respectively).
Top Greek and foreign scientists will take part in the conference, such as: David Rosenbloom, Elizabeth Scharffenberger, Monica Centanni, Stavros Tsitsiridis, Andreas Foundoulakis, Ioanna Karamanou, Anna Novokhatko, etc. The detailed program can be found at the following link:
In addition to the scientific interest and the internationally known scholars who will participate, the specific conference, with the theme “Ancient drama in education. From Antiquity to Today” also marks an opening of the University of Patras and the Archaeological Museum to the educational world of Patras, but also of Achaia more broadly, as it is primarily aimed at Secondary Education teachers (especially philologists and dramatists), who teach the ancient drama. We also note that most speeches will be in the new Greek language, so that the Conference is more accessible to the public.
The main themes of the Conference are the following: The educational dimension of drama in the classical era – The (pedagogical) norm and its transcendence – Comedy and education – then and now – Ancient Greek drama and modern school – Ancient drama and education: experimental approaches – Ancient drama and artistic expression in education.

Act 1: Dalie Paian – rhythmic-metric performance of the passage of Oedipus Tyrannus: Evangelia Thalassini (directed) and Student Group “Parados”
Act II: “Two choruses of Eros” from the tragedies Antigone by Sophocles and Medea by Euripides. Despina Georgakopoulou (director) with students of the Department of Theater Studies and collaborators of the Laboratory of Stage Practice and Speech.
Finally, on Saturday, the Conference will conclude with a Tour of the Museum’s Permanent Collections as part of the “Cultural Routes-Walk the Route” action.
