Internal political crisis cracks Javier Milei’s party

Argentina’s ruling party, La Libertad Avanza (LLA), was plunged into a political crisis that has already led to judicial complaints among some of its members, cross accusations, scandals, requests for expulsion, legislative defeats and uncertainty about the future of the advisor. “star” of president Javier Milei.

The conflicts, which were latent, ended up breaking out this week, after the opposition achieved control of the Bicameral Intelligence Commission and the Chamber of Deputies rejected the decree with which Milei intended to allocate millionaire funds reserved for the Secretariat of State Intelligence (Side).

The parliamentary defeats strained coexistence between the ruling party to the extreme, which was already involved in a series of disputes.

The most serious case was that of representative Lourdes Arrieta, who, after a meeting with her fellow legislators, which was filled with screams and mutual complaints, denounced representative Nicolás Mayoraz for gender violence.

The problem arose because Mayoraz accused Arrieta of “conspiring” against the Government. The deputy ended up crying while reports grow that she will be expelled from the ruling bloc because she has accumulated a series of scandals that affect Milei.

Arrieta was part of the delegation of pro-government deputies who visited the repressors in prison who were serving sentences for crimes against humanity, perpetrated during the last military dictatorship (1976-1983). The repudiation was widespread and escalated into a political crisis for the Government.

Since the controversy broke out, Arrieta said that she did not know who she had gone to visit because she was born in 1983 and did not know the repressors. She later surprised her with an unusual judicial complaint in which she requested that the legislators who went to jail, including her, be investigated. The response of prosecutor Sergio Mola, who dismissed the case, was lapidary.

“[Arrieta] makes a series of considerations of a childish nature, lacking plausibility and provided with a childishness that hurts the intelligence of the most unsuspecting,” the prosecutor warned.

Caputo VS the president’s sister

Santiago Caputo, advisor to President Milei, is involved in his own political crisis. In recent weeks, the La Política Online portal has claimed that there is an internal fight between him and Karina Milei, the president’s sister and current secretary general of the presidency.

According to the media, the relationship is broken and, for that reason, the advisor was sent on vacation while Milei decides. At least in recent months, the departure of officials from the Libertarian cabinet has been constant.

“Karina and Santiago today only share hatred for Sandra Petovello, who last week received a call to order from Milei. The Minister of Human Capital is seen by libertarians as a perfect symbol of the inability to manage, but as one official recognizes, ‘this complicated moment for the Government is not the best time to fire her,'” explained analyst Ignacio Fidanza, alluding to to the alleged fight within La Libertad Avanza.

The conflicts of the ruling party are not only internal and extend to its alliances. This is the case, for example, of the growing fight between the president and vice president Victoria Villarruel, who does not spare criticism of the government’s decisions.

A government like that of Javier Milei, immersed in controversy and arrogance since before taking office, could not suffer any other fate than implosion. This could arrive at any time.
