A study showed that ‘intermittent fasting’, which involves eating only at specific times, helps people with type 2 diabetes lose weight and control blood sugar levels.
A research team at the University of Illinois at Chicago announced that they obtained these results by analyzing the relationship between diet and weight in 75 diabetic patients. This study was published in ‘JAMA Network Open’.
The research team recruited 75 participants aged 18 to 80 with type 2 diabetes and divided them into three groups. Depending on diet, they were divided into an intermittent fasting group, a calorie-reduced group, and a control group.
The research team measured the participants’ weight, waist circumference, and blood sugar levels over six months. The intermittent fasting group ate only for 8 hours from noon to 8 p.m. every day, and the calorie-reducing group ate 25% less than usual. The control group was asked to maintain their usual eating and exercise habits.
As a result of the study, average daily energy intake for 6 months decreased by 313 kcal in the intermittent fasting group, 197 kcal in the calorie restriction group, and 16 kcal in the control group. Compared to the control group, body weight decreased by 3.6% in the intermittent fasting group, but only 1.8% in the calorie restriction group.
The glycated hemoglobin level, which indicates blood sugar levels, decreased by regarding 0.9% in both the intermittent fasting group and the calorie restriction group.
