Dispute Over Green Interiors on New Dart Trains
Irish Rail is perplexed by the national Transport Authority’s (NTA) insistence on avoiding green accents inside the new Dart trains, which are expected to enter service in early 2026. The trains’ exterior boasts a prominent green section, but the interior, unveiled recently at Inchicore Railway Works, lacks the color, with only small safety notices and temporary promotional posters referencing the green hue. Irish Rail, working with the manufacturer Alstom, had conducted extensive research and developed interior options featuring green handrails, grips, and seat coverings.Thes designs were met with positive feedback when presented to the public in a digital mockup and then as a life-size model displayed in Dublin. Despite this positive response, the NTA remains steadfast in its requirement to utilize yellow for interior stanchions and grab rails. The two entities have engaged in correspondence, exchanging letters throughout 2022 and 2023. In June 2022, Irish Rail’s Director of Capital Investments, Peter Muldoon, communicated to the NTA: “I note that the design proposed is the outcome of an extensive technical and aesthetic process.”New DART+ Trains Embrace Yellow, Blue, and White Color Scheme Despite Debate
The first fleet of new DART+ trains will sport a yellow, blue, and white design, a decision that sparked debate and divided opinions within the transport disability community and beyond. This color scheme departs from the iconic green livery of existing DART carriages, a choice that has been met with both praise and criticism. Initially, the new trains were envisioned in green, a choice that aligned with existing accessibility standards and garnered support from advocacy groups like Rail Users Ireland. Mark Gleeson, a spokesperson for the group, highlighted that green adheres to EU technical specifications for persons with reduced mobility and UK accessibility requirements. He expressed disappointment over the final decision, stating, “This is an example of the micromanagement of large transport projects where time, effort and public funds are spent which add no value or betterment for the passenger.” Though, the decision ultimately rested with the National Transport Authority (NTA) deputy chief executive, Hugh Creegan. Creegan emphasized the importance of high-contrast coloring for visually impaired passengers, especially those with partial sight, stating that yellow poles and grab handles provide the “optimum arrangement” to meet thier needs. He acknowledged that other color combinations might technically meet regulatory requirements but stressed the importance of prioritizing the needs of disability groups. The final decision followed discussions with various stakeholders, including disability user groups, but ultimately did not favor the green option. Outgoing Transport Minister Eamon Ryan expressed regret over the NTA’s choice, stating, “I was in favour of the green colour. I think the NTA made a mistake on that.” ryan expressed his hope that the next order of DART carriages will revert to the green livery, citing its aesthetic appeal and resting qualities. The debate surrounding the DART+ color scheme underscores the complexities of balancing design aesthetics, technical requirements, and the diverse needs of passengers. On November 13th, the National Transport Authority (NTA) unveiled aspiring plans to revamp Dublin’s public transport network. New legislation compels landlords in Ireland to provide secure bike parking for tenants as a prerequisite for granting permission to build new residential developments. This critical step promises to enhance cycling infrastructure nationwide. The new rules, introduced in November 2023, mandate that landlords must ensure sufficient, safe, and accessible bike parking for residents of newly constructed apartment complexes.
This move comes as a response to Ireland’s growing cycling trend and recognizes the crucial role secure bike parking plays in encouraging more people to choose cycling as their mode of transportation.
“These new rules send a clear message: cycling is a priority,” said a spokesperson for cycling advocacy group, Dublin Cycling Campaign. “This commitment from the government to ensure good, secure bike parking in new developments is a positive step towards making cycling more accessible and attractive for everyone.”
The regulations are expected to significantly impact the design and construction of new residential properties in Ireland. Developers will now need to factor in the provision of dedicated, secure spaces for bicycles when planning their projects. This initiative is anticipated to improve the cycling experience for residents, contributing to Ireland’s pursuit of a greener and more sustainable transportation system.
