Inter-Provincial Farm Beers and Butters Competition: A Celebration of Walloon Agri-Food Excellence

2023-08-08 09:11:00

It will be on Saturday August 19, in the sumptuous setting of the Château de Monceau-sur-Sambre, a jewel of the historical and architectural heritage of Charleroi, in the heart of Nelson Mandela Park. These are inter-provincial competitions for farm beers and butters, usually organized in the province of Liège in Battice.

True showcases of Walloon agri-food know-how, these competitions aim to promote exceptional products: raw milk farm butters from farms in the south of the country, on the one hand, and beers brewed in the provinces of Liège and of Hainaut, on the other hand.

Concretely, for this double interprovincial final 2023, four provinces will take part in the competition for the best raw milk farm butter (Liège, Namur, Luxembourg and Hainaut). Each of them will feature the three winners of their local event. There are thus twelve butters that will be put in competition.

For beers, two provinces will compete: Hainaut and Liège. Each will present the six winners of its local event in the three categories selected for this edition, namely Pale Ale, Fruitée and Blanche. No less than 36 products will be evaluated. As the spokesperson for Hainaut Développement points out, these events allow participating farms and breweries to strengthen their notoriety and gain recognition for the quality of their productions. It is also an opportunity to promote exchanges between professionals.

For each of these finals, as for the qualifying competitions, the juries will be made up of experts: chefs, members of consumer associations, culinary journalists, sommeliers. In 2023, four producers from Charleroi Métropole obtained their ticket for the ultimate test. There are two for butter, namely the Monts farm in Nalinnes (province of Hainaut) and the Lorge farm in Thy-le-Château (province of Namur). Two others are in the running for the beer final: the Rogère brewery in Thuillies competes in the Pale-Ale category with Beerat and the Val de Sambre brewery presents no less than six beers in competition. There are five fruity varieties: the Chérie peach, the Chérie raspberry, the Chérie Méditerranée, the Chérie passion and the red ADA, as well as a white one, the Blanche de Charleroi. The results will be known at the end of the day on Saturday 19 August.
