The organizer of the test match between Lionel Messi’s club Inter Miami and the Hong Kong city team made its first public statement in a post and promised fans a refund of 50 percent of their admission price.
The fans had already demanded a refund of the ticket costs during the game because Messi did not play but – like Luis Suárez – sat on the bench for 90 minutes. Inter Miami stated that the Argentine was injured. Three days later, Messi was used for half an hour in the test at Vissel Kobe.
Event organizer Tatler Asia posted a message on social media channels: “We apologize to everyone who was disappointed by the match between Hong Kong and Inter Miami on Sunday. An event that should fill the city with pride is now making sense a lot of heartache. And we’re devastated too. We gave everything to bring a world-class game to Hong Kong and – just like you – we were left hanging.”
The agency explained that the four former Barça stars in the Inter squad, Messi, Suárez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, were contractually obliged to play at least one half each. However, Miami reported Messi and Suárez as injured. “What upsets us is the lack of respect for the spectators. We asked the Inter Miami club bosses for Messi to come in front of the crowd and explain why he unfortunately can’t play. But he didn’t do that. That Messi and Suárez then playing in Japan three days later is another slap in the face.”
Tatler Asia then announced that there was an offer for fans: “We accept our responsibility as organizers. That’s why we are offering a 50 percent refund to everyone who bought a ticket through the official channels. We can only repeat it “I’m very sorry and very sorry.”
