Inter Miami bids farewell to League Cup in Messi’s absence

USA – The American football team, Inter Miami, the title holder, bid farewell to the Leagues Cup in the round of 16 in the absence of its captain Lionel Messi, after losing to Columbus Crew, three goals to two, yesterday, Wednesday, at the “Lower Dot Com Field” stadium in Ohio.

The Argentine star and team captain has been absent from Inter Miami since suffering an injury to his right ankle playing for his country against Colombia in the 2024 Copa America final, as he is still undergoing recovery.

Columbus Crew managed to turn the tables on Inter Miami with an exciting comeback after turning a two-goal deficit into a valuable three-two victory.

Paraguayan Matias Rojas opened the scoring for Inter Miami in the 10th minute of the first half, and his teammate and compatriot Diego Gomez added the second goal in the 62nd minute.

Christian Ramirez reduced the deficit for Columbus Crew in the 67th minute, and his Uruguayan teammate Diego Rossi equalized in the 69th minute, before the same player snatched the winning goal in the 80th minute.

With this result, Columbus qualified for the quarter-finals, where it will face New York City FC next Sunday, which in turn qualified after defeating Mexico’s Tigres 2-1.

The Leagues Cup, the first edition of which was won by Inter Miami, is a competition organised by the US and Mexican federations, and includes all the first division clubs in both countries.
