Intensifying Efforts to Contain Escalation in Gaza: Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan Consultations

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry announced on Saturday that Egypt is holding consultations with Saudi Arabia and Jordan to intensify efforts to contain the escalation in the Gaza Strip.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry stressed, during two phone calls with his Saudi and Jordanian counterparts, the necessity of “joining international and regional efforts and unifying the messages of the international community to demand an end to the violence and provide an opportunity for calm between the Palestinians and the Israelis.”

The Jordanian king and Biden

For his part, Jordanian King Abdullah II called for intensifying international efforts to stop the recent escalation of violence between Palestinians and Israel.

A statement from the Royal Palace said that Abdullah spoke with US President Joe Biden regarding ways to stop the escalation of the conflict and ways to protect civilians.

Abdullah warned that continued escalation would have negative repercussions on the region, and stressed the need for restraint, protection of civilians, and respect for international humanitarian law.

Saudi Foreign Ministry

Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan also discussed by telephone with the High Representative of the European Union the latest developments in the unprecedented situation in Gaza and its surroundings and the necessity of working to stop the escalation.

He stressed the Kingdom’s refusal to target defenseless civilians in any way and the necessity of respecting international humanitarian law by all parties. He also urged the European Union to move quickly and intensify efforts to calm the situation and avoid further violence.

Abbas and Blinken

In this context, the Palestinian News Agency (Wafa) reported that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas informed US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken that “the continued injustice and oppression to which our people are subjected is what is pushing things towards explosion.”

Abbas said in a telephone call that the reason for the ongoing escalation “is the practices of the colonialists and Israeli occupation forces, and the aggression once morest Islamic and Christian sanctities.”
